South Texas
Machine Tool Show in Review
The South Texas
Machine Tool and Fabrication show was held June 23 and 24 at the
Pasadena Convention Center. As
usual,
Hillary
Machinery Inc was on-hand exhibiting Hyundai-Kia machining and
turning centers, a Tsugami Swiss
style turning center, and a Milltronics
Combination Lathe showing thread repair capability.
Although Haas and Paul Cody Machine Tools reduced their exhibits to
just videos, brochures, and control demos, they still felt it was
important enough to keep
their commitment to the show's regular visitors and show their
wares along with Texas Off-line
(Gibbs), Machine Tool Technology & Sales(Espirit), MasterCam, and about
30 other exhibitors.
As
it turns out, visitors to the show
would have to surmise
that the
show's regular exhibitors who committed to the show just 2 years
earlier were either too weakened by the 2009 recession or simply not
up to
the challenge.
At least the 175+ visitors to the show will know who has what
it takes to 'gut it out' and who's 'gonna bail out' when times get
tough. The
2012 South Texas Machine Tool and Fabrication Show is tentatively
scheduled for the Spring of 2012 in Conroe, Texas. Hope to see you there!
Kalmanek Grand
Open in Review
The Kalmanek
MFG Grand Opening was held at their
new facility on June 17, 2010 in Spring, Texas and was quite
eventful. Excellent Texas BBQ and ice cold beer on tap, a beautiful
hostess, capped off with a Texas Hold'em tournament that went well
into the evening left all those who attended glad they came. Kalmanek
MFG had already seen a significant amount of work pouring into the
shop's 2 new Hyundai-Kia machines as a result of the advertising
and promotion leading up to the event and now they have even more.
Good luck to
Ken Kalmanek and Adam Wirries on their new venture.

Texas
Manufacturing Activity Weakens Slightly in June but Regional Economic
Update Shows the Region Continuing Broad Based Improvement
Texas factory
activity declined slightly in June, according to business executives
responding to the Texas Manufacturing Outlook Survey. The production
index, a key indicator of state manufacturing conditions, fell from
21 in May to -2 in June, abruptly ending a seven-month streak of
positive readings. http://www.dallasfed.org/data/outlook/2010/1006/tmos1006.cfm.
However, the regional economy continues to grow at a moderate pace.
Payroll employment growth has strengthened in Texas, and the
unemployment rate has stabilized more than a percentage point below
the U.S. rate. Manufacturing and other sectors that fared poorly
during the recession show increasing signs of life. http://www.dallasfed.org/research/update-reg/2010/1004.cfm
Texas leads
nation for job growth in May
Texas added
more jobs than any other state in May, picking up about 43,600,
according to a study Thursday from the Americans for Prosperity

Texas
major metropolitan areas earned spots on Forbes magazines list
of Americas Recovery Capitals.
Austin ranked first on the
magazines list. However, Forbes also highlighted Dallas-Fort
Worth, Houston and San Antonios ability to bounce back from the
economic recession. Border communities McAllen and El Paso also were
mentioned in the magazine. San Antonio is listed fifth on Forbes
list. http://www.bizjournals.com/sanantonio/stories/2010/06/28/daily15.html |
